Dairy Goats | How We Got Here

It was about 8 years ago when I started dreaming of having our own dairy animal. Dairy cows are usually considered the limousine of the dairy world. However, I knew that was an animal too large for my comfort.

I finally landed on goats. Nigerian Dwarf goats to be exact. Long story short, they didn’t work out for us. At the time I had recently given birth to our second child and the commitment that comes with owning a dairy animal was more than I could give. We ended up selling our entire herd of goats. Although the dream of having our own dairy was still there.

Fast forward, and another long story short, we landed on Purebred Nubian Goats. We are still relatively new to the breed.

We started with a small handful of younger goats, and then purchased a bred doe. She kidded buck/doe twins for us last January and the rest is history. We have fallen completely in love with this breed, their milk, their personalities, and the kids! At this point, I can’t see a life without having goats. We start our day with them, and I end my day with them, especially during the times we are milking.

I knew, going into goats this time, I wanted everything to be different.

When before, we found random goats on craigslist. I think we paid $100 for a doe with her twin doelings. This time, we spent much time researching and learning about different breeders, their lines, their reputation, and what kind of animals they produce. I figured out what type of animals I wanted for our own herd, and set goals accordingly.
